Brendan's 2nd Birthday
My son turned two at the end of December and we celebrated his birthday with a train themed party and of course, a train themed cake. He loves cake, especially chocolate. The cake is a 2 tiered cake with a 10 inch layer of double chocolate sour cream with white chocolate mousse filling and a 8 inch tier of white sour cream with raspberry mousse. The cake is iced in American buttercream with fondant accents. We added the birthday Thomas train to the cake. This cake was inspired by a design done by one of my favorite sugar artists, Sharon of Sharon's Sugar Shack
For the party he was dressed as a conductor - the train overalls are from Gymboree. We ordered conductor hats and train whistles for everyone from Celebrate Express. We had Thomas tattoos and coloring pages - the pages can be downloaded from the Thomas & Friends website.
I made the invitation using a digital scrapbooking kit. And I'm excited that my favorite digital scrapbooking website, Sweet Shoppe Designs, recently came out with a train themed digital scrapbooking kit that I'll use to scrapbook his party.

I love this cake! Where did u find the Thomas train figurine for the cake? Where did u find the train favor edibles? Planning my son's 2nd b-day in March and he loves Thomas/trains too! Thanks a bunch!
thanks! The train was a gift he received for his first birthday. I think I've seen it at Toys R us. The chocolate train favors are something that we sell.
What did you use to make the clouds on the cake?
buttercream icing, same as the blue sky.
this is the cutest cake I have ever seen!! What is your secret for getting your Buttercream SO smooth?? I just LOVE THIS!!!
This is the cutest cake I've ever seen. I'm just a novice and I live in Utah. The cake sounds so delicious...I'd love to make it for my little boy's 3rd bday. Would you ever share your recipes for the cake and frosting?
One more thing; What are the 2 and the railroad tracks made out of?
